Tyre labels fail to make consumer impact

A report by the UK National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) and rubber firm LANXESS says that recently introduced EU tyre labels have failed to make a significant impact on consumers.

93% of tyre retailers responding to the survey said that customers did not ask about the EU labels and only 30% of consumers knew that tyres affected fuel consumption. The report goes on to say that tyre makers had largely failed to capitalise on the new legislation and the consumer awareness opportunities it presents.

Customers were asked about their priorities when buying tyres and whether or not they asked for the tyre label information.  Richard Edy, Director of the NTDA said, “Whilst it is still early days for the tyre labelling, and we can expect consumer knowledge to improve over time, the industry should work together to improve the uptake of high-performance tyres by providing as much information to the consumer as possible.”
