Monaghan pair Sam Moffett and James O'Reilly were the delighted winners of the Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes in Killarney over the weekend, bringing their Ford Fiesta WRC to victory by almost three minutes after a day of drama.
Following wins in the Galway International and the National section of the Circuit of Ireland two weeks ago, Donegal cousins Declan and Brian Boyle led Donagh Kelly and Kevin Flanagan by eight seconds on Saturday night.
Two stages later, they had added two seconds to their advantage, but their Impreza crashed off the road and out of the rally on the third Sunday stage at Lough Allua, leaving Kelly with a commanding margin of 50 seconds over Moffett.
*With another two stages completed, Moffett had halved his deficit, and then, Kelly also went off the road on the second run through the Fuhiry stage, handing Moffett and O'Reilly their second International win on a plate.
At the finish, they had two minutes and 39 seconds in hand over Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy, having their debut drive in a WRC Impreza, with Moffett's younger brother Josh taking third place overall and the Production car class.
Corkman David Moynihan won the European Historic Championship qualifying round in his Escort, followed by Robert Smith in another Escort and the Porsche of Austrian visitor Karl Wagner.
