Philip Sheane has been selected as the sixth and final nominee for the 2019 Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award.

In recognition of his performances in the month of September ad at the final Formula Vee meeting of the season in Kirkistown, Sheane took a brace of poles, a brace of second places finishes, and a fastest lap.

Sheane, who recently turned 18, started competing three years ago and in 2017 won the Geller Trophy in Midget Car Racing. He then stepped up to single seaters in 2018, moving into the Formula Vee category where he finished 3rd in his first race. A number of podiums followed this season including his impressive final flourish in Kirkistown.

Philip is currently in 6th year in Coláiste Chill Mhantain in Wicklow Town and is hoping to go to college to study some form of engineering next year. With the 2019 racing season over, studies will take up the majority of Philip’s time in the off season but when he gets time after school he will be rebuilding his Formula Vee for the 2020 championship where he is aiming to compete again.

In the near future, Sheane would like to race for the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy in the UK and continue competing abroad in a bid to make it as a professional driver. Philip is supported by Sheane Cars, Cough-ee Doc and D&W Crash Repairs and he would like to thank them for their help throughout the year.

Having been selected as the final nominee for the 2019 season, Sheane joins Lucca Allen, Max Hart, William Kellett, Charlie Linnane and James Roe Jr as contenders for the prestigious Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award and the historic Sexton Trophy. This award is presented annually and is supported by Sport Ireland and Motorsport Ireland. The interviews for the award will take place on Tuesday November 12th with the winner being announced at the Champions of Irish Motorsport Awards lunch on December 10th.
