Here is one for Gay Byrne and his road safety team to ponder. There are thousands of avoidable road accidents on Irish roads each year caused not by alcohol, excess speed or mobiles, but by lipstick?

A survey by insurance company Diamond, estimates that make-up application is a big contributor to accident stats. One in five female motorists admitted to touching up their make-up while on the move and 3% said they had caused an accident while applying cosmetics.

The youngest drivers were the ones who most regularly put beauty before safety, with a massive 9% of 18-year-olds having had an accident due to being distracted by hair and make-up issues.
