Indiana to test self charging roads

One of the major factors that holds back the sale of Electric Vehicles is the need to stop and charge them periodically. But imagine the possibilities if an EV could be charged on the go by driving on a special road.

The state of Indiana in the USA is the latest organisation to experiment with this technology. It aims to incorporate wireless charging technology into major highways which will charge EVs on the move. The development is parts of the ASPIRE Initiative, which stands for Advancing Sustainability through Power Infrastructure for Road Electrification.

The initiative is backed by the National Science Foundation and also involves government, academic and business concerns, including the German firm Magment, which makes magnetized cement. The company claim that this has a wireless transmission efficiency of up to 95% and can charge in all conditions.

Purdue University will take on the role of lab testing the material which, if successful, will lead to the construction of a quarter mile test road using magamnet.

Similar testing and research is also happening at other projects in Germany, Sweden, Israel and other US states.
