European car makers want urgent action on EU emissions deadline

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has urged the EU to rethink strict emissions targets that are due to come into force at the start of 2025.

Under the new rules, European car manufacturers face millions of euro in fines if they do not meet EV sales targets. However, with EV sales falling across Europe these targets now look like impossible goals.

President of ACEA and CEO of Renault Group, Luca de Meo, has called for much more flexibility in the application of strict emission rules. He says the car makers could be forced limit production of some 2 million cars that would attract fines, or be subject to fines which could total some €15 billion across the industry. He also argues that sales cannot develop as fast as required on the EV front because of other factors such as lack of infrastructure.

It is believed that the two car makers most likely to face largest fines if rules are adjusted are Ford and VW.
