BMW have confirmed that for the foreseeable future it will continue to build petrol and diesel cars alongside electric.

The strategy, which was recently outlined by Bernd Körber, BMW’s product boss, also includes keeping front and rear-wheel-drive platforms, as well as all powertrain choices.

Bernd said, “We’re into a technology-flexible approach. If a market shifts, we don’t have to close plants; we just shift to another drivetrain.”

Meanwhile, speaking about EV development, Jochen Goller, a BMW board member, commented,  "I think with more models coming with a longer range and a shorter charging time, some of the purchase barriers will be removed.”

BMW has removed the availability of diesel engines from many of its models, preferring to concentrate on more fuel efficient hybrid petrol models.
