A new vehicle reliability and maintenance cost survey has shown that cars from Japanese and Korean manufacturers are the most reliable. The survey was carried out by Warrantywise in the UK, with each manufacturer ranked by a dependability factor, based on the number of reported faults or breakdowns.

The UK average score was 75, however Toyota, Honda and Suzuki far exceeded this with ratings of 93, 93 and 92 respectively. They were followed by Mitsubishi, Mazda, Hyundai and Nissan, all with scores in the high 80’s. Ford was the top ranked European car maker on 85. Below average performers included, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar and Porsche.

The study also looked at repair costs. Warrantywise CEO, Lawrence Whittaker, commented, “There are some obvious trends, such as the more exotic you go, the higher the repair bills will be, but there are notable exceptions lower down the price scale, with some of the more mainstream brands showing rather costly repair bills. Unsurprisingly, the Japanese carmakers top the chart, with the more exotic European brands and sadly some British makers as well nestling at the bottom.”
