Schaeffler issues SAC conversion kit warning

Schaeffler Automotive is warning garages not to fit a conversion kit to replace its LuK Self Adjusting Clutches (SACs).

SACs have been chosen by vehicle manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, for resolving the issue of pedal load changes during the lifetime of a diaphragm spring clutch. Schaeffler say the SAC is the only system which is guaranteed to maintain the performance and drivability of the originally fitted parts and warns against the fitment of non-SAC alternatives.

Technical Services Manager Malcolm Short commented, “Fitting a non-SAC alternative may radically alter a vehicle’s gear change dynamics. It will no longer deliver the same comfort or drivability originally intended by the vehicle manufacturer and that the driver  will have become accustomed to.”

Malcolm also points out that the LuK SAC, maintains original vehicle dynamics, gives a 30 percent lighter pedal feel, offers an increased service lifetime and delivers a smooth drive.

The Schaeffler technical team also point out that “save a few pence by choosing an SAC conversion kit” is likely to prove a false economy as these are not OE specification, have a heavier pedal feel, offer a reduced service life and can cause possible wear and premature failure of associated products.

Schaeffler Automotive has produced a new leaflet that sets out the merits of the LuK SAC which works by compensating for the wear in the driven plate using a sensor spring and adjuster ring that controls the diaphragm spring geometry, thus maintaining a constant pedal load.
