With an unprecedented combination of performance and the virtually silent propulsion of an electric vehicle, Porsche’s new 918 Spyder hybrid sports car is packed with technological innovation. NGK spark plugs are at the heart of the advanced engine, helping to give the new car its cutting edge performance.


Porsche says its first-ever hybrid sports car is able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.6 seconds while achieving an average  fuel consumption of between 91mpg and 94mpg.

Tim Ward, Deputy General Manager, Sales & Marketing at NGK Spark Plugs says, “For NGK to be selected to provide our spark plugs as original equipment for such an innovative hybrid sports car as the Porsche 918 Spyder is tribute to the technical excellence of our engineers.” He added, “In order to guarantee maximum performance even under the extremely challenging conditions of its high-revving engine, our OE technical team endowed the plug with the most advanced ignition technology available today.”

The Porsche 918 Spyder is a targa with a chassis manufactured from carbon fibre reinforced plastic. The plug-in hybrid vehicle has a 4.6-litre V8 engine that delivers 608bhp, 528Nm of torque and can be run at speeds up to 9150rpm. Additionally, it is equipped with two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear axle, which together add another 282bhp.

The exclusive NGK OE spark plug for this engine, designated SILMFR8A8G, has a slim M10 thread diameter with an extra long reach which allows for a larger layout of the engine’s cooling ducts. The high-tech spark plug also features NGK’s long insulator design with its cup-shaped terminal which prevents flashovers even at the exceptionally high ignition voltages applied to the spark plug on-board. This is manufactured from a ceramic which offers extraordinary dielectric strength while a specially shaped insulator nose to further improve the cold-starting characteristics.
