While EV sales remain firmly on the up, many buyers that have made the switch, are still concerned about their new car’s range. Range anxiety is a particular concern on longer journeys, yet many drivers fail to do all they can to maximise EV range. 

For example, one simple way to boost range is to put on an extra layer of clothing on cold mornings rather than turn up the in-car heater. This is because the heating and air con system can be a major drain on battery power and unlike an internal combustion engine, the electric motor does not generate heat. This means that the simple act of putting on a jumper could give an electric vehicle more miles of range. 

One of the attractions of EV driving is the fantastically impressive acceleration that they possess. Drivers tend to like using this, for example, accelerating away from lights. Moving these heavy vehicles from a standing start to a fast speed in just a few seconds does use a lot of energy, so the more often a driver does this, the quicker the range will drop. By simply adopting a smoother, more measured driving style, range can be significantly increased. 

Cruising speed is also an important factor. The faster a car travels the more energy it uses. Typically on a motorway an EV will be most efficient at around 100kph. Push up to 120kph and the vehicle range will drop by around 35km.

Just like an ICE car, correct tyre pressures are important for economy. Under inflated tyres cause more on road friction so the electric motor has to work harder to achieve the same speed. Tyre pressures also need to be adjusted when carrying more passengers or luggage.

Weight is often a factor that drivers fail to consider. More weight in the car will reduce range so it makes sense not to carry any unnecessary items in the boot or passenger area. 

Aerodynamics can also boost range by allowing a vehicle to slip through the air with less resistance. Many EVs tend to be SUV designs which are not very aerodynamic, but drivers can improve things by removing roof racks and rails when not in use. It is also worth considering that an open window can also reduce aerodynamic efficiency.
