The current dynamic situation in the used car sector in Ireland, with a lack of supply and rising prices,  is forcing some second hand car dealers to look further afield to source vehicles

Irish dealers have been hesitant about looking to Japan for supply, but many have found a solution by working directly with Jarlath Keary of IMEKA CARS. Jarlath is based in Japan, giving dealers that all important human connection in the Far East. IMEKA CARS is a fully registered business and is owned by Jarlath and Akemi Keary. Jarlath is a mechanical engineer from Monivea, in Co. Galway and his wife, Akemi, is a marketing and linguistic graduate from Nagoya Japan and is fluent in Japanese, Chinese and English. Both Akemi and Jarlath have been involved in the motor industry for 20 years.

IMEKA CARS is affiliated to all the major car auction houses in Japan.  It provides the Irish Motor Trade with a direct link to Japanese auctions and a full service without the need for intermediaries.

Jarlath says the service they provide, from selection of a preferred car to its arrival in Ireland is transparent and hassle free. The choice is excellent with tens of thousands of cars offered for sale every day at Japanese car auctions. IMEKA CARS can arrange bidding, payment of auction fees and bidding fees, transport of the car to the port, car port storage up to 30 days, shipping, translation of auction sheets and customs documents, EMS of documents to the customer, vehicle deregistration, and the payment of Japanese taxes and duties are all included as standard part of their service to the Irish motor trade. IMEKA also assist with booking of the next available shipping and customs partners in Dublin. All auction houses provide a highly detailed vehicle report, and on request for an additional fee a pre-auction inspection of cars can be arranged for a client.

Jarlath and Akemi anticipate that importing vehicles from Japan will rise rapidly in popularity over the coming months and aim to be the preferred partners of Irish trade in Japan. While the UK used car market is suffering supply issues at present and Brexit means UK importing is more complex and expensive, a recent EU-Japan trade deal, has seen tariffs cut on the import of Japanese cars  into the EU. The EU import tariffs on cars manufactured in Japan is also set to continue to fall year-on-year until it stands at zero.

Added to this the current shortage in new car supply, globally because of chip shortages and it is clear that used imports from Japan will become an increasingly attractive option for dealers, particularly with the support and expertise of IMEKA CARS.
