The BMW 5 Series has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests.

Testers found that the new BMW showed good all-round performance in crash protection and avoidance tests thanks to its new platform, body and updated safety features. Track tests demonstrated that the autonomous braking system can effectively assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating critical rear-end crashes with other cars and pedestrians.

The 5 Series also produced impressed results in pedestrian safety where its standard fit ‘Person Warning’ system and active bonnet were praised. The organisation however did have some concerns over passive safety.

Five star awards also went to the Audi Q5 and Volvo S90 and V90.

Fiat’s Doblò  and the Ford Mustang performed less well getting 3 and 2 star awards respectively.
