Brembo highlight innovation in EV braking technology

Braking technology for electric vehicles was the subject of a presentation given by Siti Abdulla, of Braking specialist Brembo in the Workshop Training Hub.

Siti explained that although regenerative braking, using the electric motors, accounts for much of an EVs braking needs, the vehicles still require a normal braking system to work alongside the regenerative system. The weight of these braking components is a concern on already heavy EVs so Brembo is developing components made from lighter materials such as steel and stainless steel. This can provide a significant weight reduction of up to 30% making the vehicle lighter and thus more efficient.  Siti also explained how Brembo were pioneering new developments in the formation of metal that also allows the use of recycled materials in the production process.

Siti then went on to discuss some revolutionary braking technology that will alter the braking systems on EVs in years to come, Brembo Sensify. This is a pioneering intelligent braking system that integrates the most advanced software based on artificial intelligence with the company’s quality brake components. The system uses predictive algorithms and data management to control the brake system digitally. Data collection is leveraged to improve the driver experience and allows the system to be constantly updated.

Siti explained how Sensify could improve a drivers experience on the road and customize brake response to their driving style. She described the system as ABS taken to a whole new level.

Sensify is also a more sustainable braking solution. Thanks to the optimised braking action on each wheel combined with the absence of drag between pads and discs, meaning emissions are minimized. It also offers flexibility for car makers, simplifying integration in any electric and internal combustion engine platform.

The other technology that Siti discussed was Brembo Greenance a future-oriented braking solution that lasts up to three times longer and combines a lower environmental impact, with more than 80% emissions reduction in both PM10 and PM2.5 particles, without any braking performance compromise.

The Greenance Kit Concept combines a special alloy discs and dedicated brake pads and is directly derived from the company’s continuous innovation in the Original Equipment market. Brembo’s latest solution aims to combine top braking performance with a lower environmental impact, while also increasing disc life.

Siti’s presentation showed how Brembo is pioneering the development of new braking technology to meet the differing braking needs of electric vehicles. At the same time the company is also reducing the environmental impact of its products, whilst always offering the very highest levels of safety and performance.
