Ford is introducing a new camera technology that could prevent accident by letting cars see around corners. The new Front Split View Camera will be available on new Ford Galaxy and S-MAX models.

The system uses a camera mounted in the grille to project a 180° view which allows a driver to see hazards at blind junctions or when leaving car park spaces. Ronny Hause, engineer, Driver Assistance Electronic Systems, for Ford of Europe says the system will also be useful instances where trees and bushes restrict a driver view. He says, “Simply driving off driveways can be a challenge. Much like a rear-view camera, Front Split View Camera is one of those technologies that people will soon find indispensable.”

The system is activated at the touch of a button and uses a 1-megapixel camera to display images on an 8-inch colour touchscreen. The camera, which is just 33mm wide, is kept clear by a specially designed retractable jet-washer that operates automatically when the windscreen wipers are activated.
