New figures from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) show that fatalities on European roads halved over the last decade. However, the council say more can be done to reduce this figure further.

Tougher measures against drink-driving and increased use of seatbelt are two of the main factors which have attributed to the reduction and the ETSC wants to see more action in these areas. The organisation estimates mandatory reminders for all seats could prevent an additional 900 deaths per year. It is also calling for mandatory alcohol interlocks, which prevent the car from starting if the driver fails a breathalyzer test, for repeat drink-drivers.
