TPMS battery maintenance made easy with Bartec

With all new cars sold in Europe since 2012 required to have tyre pressure monitoring systems, it is now essential for garages to have the correct tools to be able to identify faults and problems with TPMS sensors.

One of the most common issues is battery failure and technicians using the Bartec TECH450 and TECH600 tools can now simply download the latest tool software which enables them to read out and graphically display the current battery status of each individual TPMS sensor that supports this function.

This is technology breakthrough means a technician can quickly and clearly see whether a sensor is operating correctly, or has a weak battery that needs to be replaced.

Colin Webb, MD of Bartec Auto ID comments, “This new safety feature offers a valid diagnostic of the battery status of TPMS sensors. It means that Bartec are the first TPMS manufacturer to enable extensive battery predictive maintenance. We complete the TPMS diagnosis by displaying the battery status to ensure the highest level of safety. This is not only a breakthrough for drivers, but also for automotive specialist shops and fleet managers.”

Colin points out that tyre pressure determines fuel consumption, driving behaviour and tyre life, so it is vital for automotive specialists to offer customers a fast, comprehensive but, above all, safe service.

The respective battery status symbols apply to all vehicle classes. When a sensor transmits the battery status, different information is sent depending on the manufacturer, such as low battery flag, a voltage, percentage capacity remaining, or remaining months.

With the Bartec tools if a battery power is more than a quarter a green checkmark appears in a green circle. The battery performance is therefore guaranteed for several months to come. If a yellow battery icon appears, it indicates a low battery. This should be replaced in the next six months. If a red battery symbol is displayed, the battery status is at 10% or less and requires immediate replacement.

Colin adds, “The new feature enables our customers and partners to proactively identify an empty or soon-to-be-empty battery. This enables them to offer an even more professional service and to sell more sensors. Faulty sensors can be replaced with the Bartec Universal programmable Ritesensor or RitesensorBlue for Tesla and other EVs. This integrates with the existing tool process and has the advantage for the customer that another visit to the workshop just because of the TPMS sensor can be avoided. So, it’s a win-win for all parties.”
