The Irish Championship Circuit Racing (ICCR) has delivered a new track record in the opening round for Rathoath’s Cian Carey.

Carey, a former Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year broke the 25 year old record, setting a lap time of 49.275 seconds in his F317 Dallara in the second Formula BOSS of the weekend.. The previous record set by Nigel Greenwood was set in 1997 in a Formula 1 Tyrrell was 50.220 seconds.

Recent upgrading of the track at Mondello provided increased grip for the competitors and ideal conditions played a part and seem to have benefitted Carey’s record time.

However, all was not perfect for Carey as the race itself was won by Jonathan Fildes in his Lola T96/50 after Carey was hit with a 2 place penalty for overtaking under a yellow flag demoting him to third.

In all, 13 Championships were featured in the 23 race 2 day meeting, with the Fiesta Zetec class fielding a grid of 30 cars. Respects were also paid by the Formula Vee and Formula Sheane competitors on the grid to the recently deceased race car builder David Sheane, who was instrumental in the creation of both formulas here in Ireland.
