Slick roads spell danger

Slick roads spell danger
Share:

It does not seem to happen often in Ireland, but occasionally we get a hot dry spell of weather for more than a few days. When this breaks and inevitably the rain comes, most drivers fails to realise that roads can be just as dangerous as if they are affected by ice.

The reason is that during a prolonged dry spell, roads develop a build-up of oil, bitumen and rubber deposits. Heavier EV’s and SUVs are especially prone to shedding small particles of rubber. Normally these deposits are washed away by rain, but after an extended dry period, when it rains for the first time these more extensive deposits mix with the rain water and create a slick greasy road surface. Similar to ice, this can mean increased stopping distances and a higher risk of skidding. Adding to the risk, most drivers are unaware of these conditions and do not adjust their driving style accordingly.

Evidence shows that there is always a spike in serious accidents as a long spell of dry weather breaks. Motorist can follow some simple advice to help avoid these dangers.
  • Slow down and allow extra distance from the vehicle in front.
  • Avoid harsh braking and harsh acceleration. EV drivers especially need to take note of this as these cars often have high performance acceleration.
  • Make more gentle manoeuvres as if driving in icy conditions.
  • Make sure your tyres have good tread and are correctly inflated.

This may not be an issue that Irish drivers encounter too often, but it can be a very serious danger, so it is well worth sharing this information with others.
