Samsung pioneers the see through safety truck

It is a heart stopping moment that most drivers have experienced. You pull out to pass an articulated truck only see a vehicle coming towards you at the last minute. It is a common danger on two way traffic roads that could be averted in the future by the introduction of new technology from Samsung.

The Korean technology giant calls it the Safety Truck, which uses a wireless camera at the front of a tractor unit to relay an image of the road ahead to large screens at the rear of the truck, so that following motorist can see if it is safe to pass.

Samsung say the system has performed well in tests and believe the concept could be a major life saver. Designers at the company were inspired to develop the system by the high number of road deaths caused by overtaking accidents in Argentina.

In addition to making it easier for drivers to decide whether it's safe to try and pass a truck, the video-screen technology could also help reduce the risk of accidents caused by sudden braking or animals crossing the road according to Samsung.

The company says the next step is to perform the corresponding tests in order to comply with the existing national protocols and obtain the necessary permits and approvals.

The big question mark over the system is whether fleet operators would invest in such technology unless they are compelled to do so or had some financial incentive. No doubt the advertising world would have an interest in giant mobile video screens for when a vehicle is stopped, although this in itself could open up a whole new accidental can of worms.
