Steve Smith has returned home to the UK after sporting NGK’s famous logo on the highest driveable road in the world during an epic charity motorcycle adventure.

The 49-year-old took on the Khardung La pass in India which stands at approximately 5360 metres high on a trusty Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle to raise funds for The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) and The Cotswold Down’s Syndrome Group because they’ve helped his six-year-old son Alfie so much.

The trip, supported by NGK Spark Plugs, saw Steve and his fellow riders cope with accidents, altitude sickness and mechanical problems but thankfully he has returned home safely to Alfie, wife Tiffanie and eight-year-old daughter Nancy.

He decided to display the iconic NGK roundel on his motorcycle helmet through his friendship with Stuart Bayne, Sales Manager – North for NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, who has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for the DSA over the past few years.

Steve commented, “Epic is a word commonly used these days, often to describe mundane or mediocre events, but it is precisely the word to describe the Top of the World Challenge that I have just returned from. This adventure was a challenge from start to finish, we rode in every kind of weather, from bright and sunny low 30c’s to freezing conditions in a snowstorm, and on surfaces ranging from smooth tarmac to bolder strewn rivers.” He added, “Over the five days of riding we covered only 400 miles, but these were the most intense miles. On four occasions we rode over passes of 5000 metres+ and twice over Khardung La, the highest of these at a mighty 5360 metres, once in brilliant sunshine the other in a snowstorm.”

Steve thanked everyone who had helped support his epic journey.
