MEYLE offers allergy driving advice

German parts supplier MEYLE has issued some timely advice for 60 million drivers across Europe who suffer from allergies such as hay fever. Pollen at this time of year does not just affect driving comfort, it can also have serious safety implications. For example at a speed of just 50 km/h, a sneezing driver can be blind for up to 14 metres. To ensure that driving remains pleasant and safe, MEYLE offers the following tips:

1. Check the pollen forecast and try to avoid journeys at times of day when pollen is at its peak.
2. Regular cleaning of the interior of a car, especially the leg room, will reduce pollen swirl caused by movement while driving. Experts recommend vacuum cleaners with so-called suspended particle filters.
3. Put jackets and other unworn cloths items in the boot to reduce pollen circulation.
4. Keep the windows closed and use the air circulation function of the air conditioner to stay cool.
5. Wear a pair of sunglasses with a good fit. Teary and itchy eyes not only impair vision but they are also more sensitive to light. Glasses reduce the contact of the mucous membrane with pollen and reduce distraction behind the wheel.
6. Have your air conditioning system serviced regularly.
7. Rely on high-quality filters.

The cabin air filter should be changed every 15,000 kilometres or at least once a year. MEYLE offers the right filter for all needs and car makes and models. Whether antibacterial, combination or particulate filters, depending on the vehicle, the filter can protect against soot and smog, bacteria, mould and malodorous gases as well as trapping pollen.
