The IMI held another of its informative automotive technology seminars last month, this time covering developing technology in some key product areas. The event, hosted by Serfac, took place at the Dublin Institute of Technology with the seminar given by Alan Povey, Technical Manager of DENSO Aftermarket UK.

In his presentation, Alan gave an overview of the latest technological developments in air conditioning systems, diesel injection systems, spark plugs and wiper blades, as well as a flavour of how technology in these areas will develop in the future. He also gave some useful hints and tips on fault diagnosis and informed attendees about the wealth of useful information they can access through the DENSO Professional Technical Library Service.

Alan also highlighted some key problem areas on modern engines, in particular showing how worn spark plugs can cause other problems such as coil pack failure. He then illustrated the benefit of changing plugs regularly and how DENSO's TT range of spark plugs, offers benefits in terms of cost saving, through improved fuel economy and less wear and tear on the engine and ignition system. Alan also explained the importance of lambda sensors and how failure to replace these components can lead to poor vehicle performance, reliability issues and a sharp rise in fuel consumption.

Rounding off the presentation, Alan also touched on some of the future technologies that DENSO is now developing, such as lasers to replace sparks for more efficient fuel combustion and starter motors for Start/Stop vehicles, where the starter is always engaged for quicker restarts.
