Hyundai demos self driving safety systems

If you thought self driving cars were purely in the domain of the luxury car makers, the latest demonstration of the Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keeping Assist on the new Hyundai Genesis might make you think again.

Hyundai have released a video showing off its new active safety systems with impressive results. Using six new Genesis models, six stunt drivers and a low loader with lots of padding the team took to a track at the Hyundai's testing facility in the Mojave Desert. As they drove around the 6.4 mile circuit the cars were switched to automatic cruise control and five of the drivers then climbed through sun roofs and jumped on to the low loader running alongside. The sixth driver took his hands off the wheel and his feet off the pedals before applying a blindfold.

All six cars then follow the truck in a perfectly spaced convoy showing how the automated system can not only keep a safe distance, but also stay in lane. At the end of the test the truck pulls in front of the convoy and comes to a sudden stop. The Automatic Emergency Braking system then stops each car safely.
