Accelerate electronically was a trend in the automotive industry in the early 1990s. Hella recognized this trend and produced the successful pedal module. In all new vehicles, the electronic pedal module now replaces the mechanical gas pedal. In February, the 100-millionth electronic pedal module was produced in Recklinghausen, Germany – and the success story continues.

The module is namely the basic prerequisite for the environmentally friendly e-gas systems for reduced fuel consumption and therefore reduced CO2 emission. In the future, these systems will have ever-greater success worldwide.

Hella was one of the first manufacturers of this technology and is now the global market leader in this product segment. The first pedal module was produced in 1996 at Hella in Recklinghausen, Germany, and today more than 500 employees work on this product. The latest generation pedals are considerably more economic, compact and almost 50% lighter than the first generation.

The technology: Pedal sensors record the position of the pedal and generate the vehicle-specific pedal characteristic. Hella was the first manufacturer to develop integrated electronic pedal sensors for diesel and gasoline engines. They are used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles and electric vehicles. The pedal sensors were designed in such a way that the pedal, the pedal-force generation and the signal generation are combined in a modular unit. The central element of the module is the position sensor for recording the driver's command.
