CarTok tips that do serious car damage

With many people seemingly running their life based on TikTok “hacks” videos, it would seem that car care and maintenance is also an area that has attracted the attention of the makers of short advice videos.

Hundreds of millions of TikTok videos have been viewed under the CarTok #, however, the advice is often, at least, questionable and in some cases is outright dangerous.

The UK Auto Trader organisation recently found that 59% of the advice offered can actually cause long-term vehicle damage.

The worst offenders are the cleaning hack videos, which use household items, such as toothpaste or coconut oil, rather than specialist car care products, with some 80% of tips being potentially damaging.

Auto Trader also found that 90% of videos about car repair and maintenance involved practices which were not suitable for anyone not qualified to work on cars.
