Average speed zone cameras are currently being installed on a section of the M7 motorway in Co Tipperary, in a move that could signal the start of the end of motorists breaking the 120 kph limit.

The cameras are being installed between Junction 26 (Nenagh West) and Junction 27 (Birdhill) and will operate in both directions. They will be installed on conspicuous yellow poles and the area will be clearly marked with appropriate signage. Motorists will also be informed when the camera go live after a period of commissioning and testing.

This will be the first average speed detection area on Ireland’s primary motorway system, but if successful others are sure to follow. A system has been operational in the Dublin Port Tunnel since 2017 and gardaí say it has brought about a drop in drivers exceeding the 80 kph limit from 55% to 10%.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland has identified the section of the M7 in the trial as one where the speed limit is exceeded by 40% of drivers.

Garda Superintendent Tom Murphy commented, "This system will save lives and make our roads safer. An Garda Síochána are delighted to work with TII and RSA to implement this project."

Kevin O’Rourke TII Head of Network Operation said; "The success of the Average Speed Safety Camera system in Dublin Tunnel is demonstrated by the reduction in speeding incidents by about 80%. This highlights the potential significant safety benefits for both the road user and our teams working on the motorways from using such systems on the wider motorway network and is in line with international experience.”
