Autoelectro offers BMW alternator advice

Independent remanufacturer of starter motors and alternators, Autoelectro, has highlighted the solution to an issue relating to a specific BMW that is causing the failure of the alternator regulator.

The problem is overcharging of the battery on the BMW E60/E61 530d MY (2004-2005). As the battery reaches its optimum charge, the ECU attempts to shut down the alternator, but it cannot, as the part is unable to communicate with the failed regulator and the system overcharges.

Additionally, it is causing complications with the wiper system, with wiper blades only wiping occasionally despite being placed on a constant setting. The failure is highlighted by an intermittent battery warning light flashing on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Autoelectro recommends that technicians should carry out the following steps after examination:
  •     Disconnect and remove the battery
  •     Leave the vehicle overnight to reset the ECU
  •     Replace the alternator with Autoelectro part number AEK2319
  •     Install and connect a fully-charged battery
Failure to follow this procedure will result in the premature breakdown of the alternator after replacement.

This latest bulletin from Autoelectro is one of more than 500 articles available on the company’s website – www.autoelectro.co.uk – which provides free advice to technicians.
