Opel is to launch an all-electric model called the Ampera in 2012. The move was announced at the Geneva Motor Show, with details emerging of a five-door hatchback powered solely by electricity. Opel says that the car will differ significantly from other hybrids as it will have an onboard engine, but this will only be used for recharging batteries.

Range when using the on-board generator will be up to 300 miles. Drivers will also have the option of plugging in to a household socket to recharge.
