Schaeffler, the company behind the LuK clutch, INA tensioner and FAG wheel bearings brands, has continued its long and illustrious association with top level motorsport in 2014 with support for teams involved in two prestigious championships.
The company is once again partnering Audi in Europe’s most popular touring car race series, the DTM championship, with defending champion Mike Rockenfeller behind the wheel of an Audi RS 5.
The team has taken two of the last three titles in the DTM, which stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft (German Touring Car Championship), and Rockenfeller, known as ‘Rocky’ to his thousands of fans, is currently second in the race series driving his Audi in the familiar green and yellow Schaeffler colours.
Two years before ‘Rocky’ won his title it was Audi driver Martin Tomczyk who clinched his first DTM title in the 2011 season in his Audi again sporting the colours of the globally renowned automotive supplier.
The two victories achieved by Tomczyk and Rockenfeller have been the highlights of a commitment which Schaeffler and its LuK clutch, INA tensioner and FAG wheel bearings product brands began in the international touring car racing series way back in 1986.
Schaeffler has also been working with Porsche in the cutting edge areas of hybrid and powertrain technology as it competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the newly developed 919 Hybrid LMP1 sports car. This finished an impressive third in its debut race at Silverstone and recently led the field at the famous Le Mans 24-hour race.
For Schaeffler involvement in motorsport at the top level not only provides great exposure for the company brands but is also a key aspect of on-going product development. Technologies first developed and tested on the track will often find their way into OE supply at various vehicle production facilities across Europe, while the same race bread OE technology is also found in the Schaeffler aftermarket range.
