Ignition specialist NGK has been selected as an OE supplier of glow plugs for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) new 2.2-litre multi-jet II common-rail diesel engine. This is the first time that FCA has specified a ceramic glow plug from NGK as OE and the plugs have debuted under the bonnet of the new Jeep Cherokee Limited.

The new engine is one of the most powerful and economic power units featured in the Jeep Cherokee range and is available in two versions which deliver 185bhp and 200bhp respectively, both with a maximum torque of 440 Nm.

NGK developed the CZ503 glow plug as original equipment for the engine. The plug is a second-generation New Ceramic High Temperature type (NHTC2) with outstanding glow characteristics. It reaches its operating temperature of 1000°C in just one second and extended duration post-glow temperatures of up to 1350°C.  This allows for an environmentally-friendly cold start and smooth idling even at lowest temperatures and guarantees minimum output of harmful particulates and pollutants. As a result, it contributes significantly towards the engine’s compliance with strict EURO6 emission regulations.

NGK Spark Plugs Marketing Manager Mark Hallam said, “We are delighted that our ceramic glow plugs have been selected by Fiat for such an important engine. This contract further demonstrates how as a company we work hand in hand with the world’s major vehicle manufacturers to produce parts that are manufactured to meet their specific and exacting requirements.”
