New vehicle import procedures

The Revenue Commissioners have introduced new procedures for importing used vehicles into Ireland. National Car Testing Service (NCTS), will now carry out pre-registration examination appointments, for which bookings must be made within seven days of the vehicle entering Ireland. The whole registration process must then be completed in 30 days.

The person importing the car must bring the car, with all documentation, to the NCTS for examination. They then send details to the Revenue, who will determine the amount of VRT to pay. Payment is made directly to the NCTS, who will then pass on the new registration number as assigned by the revenue. Registration certificates will be posted directly from the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division of the Department of Transport, in Shannon.

The new procedure is explained at www.ncts.ie/vrt where inspection bookings can also be made.
