Fake designer labels may be nothing new, but police in Italy have uncovered a counterfeiting operation with a difference. They have arrested 15 people for producing fake Ferrari’s and selling them off at a fraction of the cost of the originals.

The counterfeiting ring was said to be very sophisticated and involved the reproduction of not just selected Ferrari components, but complete cars masquerading as sporty models from the genuine Italian stable. Police say the people involved included highly skilled motor trade technicians who used fake parts, a few original components and parts from other makes to piece together their replica Ferraris. The vehicles were sold on at a fraction of the cost of the real models, mostly to purchasers who were very well aware that they were making a bogus buy. Police confiscated twenty-one cars in the raids at Sicilian garages.
