On the VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne, an increasing problem has been identified by garages, of cracking noises being heard and strong vibrations felt in the passenger compartment.

 

Febi says that the reason for this is often a defective or worn prop shaft centre bearing. The rubber of the bearing is prone to split due to wear and tear, leading to the noises and vibrations, which can be worse depending on the vehicle load. This leaves the bearing unable to support the prop shaft and as a result it requires replacement.

 

The prop shaft centre bearing is not available separately from the manufacturer and can only be ordered with the complete prop shaft. This makes the repair very expensive.
