Tool specialist Chicago Pneumatic has given some useful advice on an age old workshop question as part of its Expert Corner advice series.

Technicians offer ponder the question pneumatic or electric power tools, which is right for me? The Chicago Pneumatic experts say there is no one simple answer and it does depend on the application. They do however offer some useful tips on when each choice is best suited. Each technology has its advantages and disadvantages and key considerations are:

Tool requirements, for example power, efficiency, ergonomics or freedom of movement.

The working environment such quality of airline and access to sockets

Corded electric tools are generally convenient and economical but may lack power

Cordless electric tools offer flexibility and mobility, however, they do need to be charged

Pneumatic tools generally have better ergonomics and are lighter and more powerful. They are low maintenance and if well maintained and lubricated, can be used continuously, 24/7.

As a practical example the CP experts have looked at the selection of a grinder. If performance is vital for an application, then pneumatic grinders deliver the best results. They provide a better power-to-weight ratio, and have a longer service interval, which contributes to an overall better performing tool. However, if initial purchase cost is a main priority, then an electric grinder is the best option as they are attractively priced. An electric grinder is also a good option if there is no air line set-up available or air quality is poor.

Chicago Pneumatic say that leading manufacturers continue to innovate and improve their tools every year, so technologies continue to advance. This means it is worth seeking the advice of trusted experts and distributors to double-check that the tool chosen is the most appropriate for an application. Christophe Roland, Global Product Marketing Manager Assembly at Chicago Pneumatic ayas, “Focus on your needs first, then speak to your local specialist who will be able to assist you in making the right choice.”
