Tesla aims for 90% accident reduction

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla recently released data for accident reduction showing its first generation Autopilot system had reduced accident rates by 40%. The company CEO Elon Musk has now revealed that it is aiming for the second generation Autopilot autonomous driving system to reduce accidents by 90%.

The main trust of the Autopilot system is the Autosteer feature, but it also includes other technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Collision Warnings. Tesla is now using information gathered from some 1.3 billion miles of data produced by vehicle cameras and sensors to further improve the systems accident prevention capabilities.

The Auto pilot system had been the subject of negative publicity when a Tesla vehicle was involved in a fatal crash in Florida last year. However, a report by the U.S. National Highway Safety Administration has exonerated the Tesla Autopilot system.
