Comline offers oil filter fitting tips

The latest Technical Bulletin from parts specialist Comline highlights how to avoid costly mistakes when it comes to oil filter replacement.

The first important factor is not to over tighten the new filter. Comline recommends that the replacement filter is hand tightened only and not tightened with a filter removal tool. This can make future removal more difficult and can damage the protective coating on the canister which can lead to early corrosion. Comline says as a general rule the new filter should be twisted until there is gasket contact between the vehicle and the filter. The fitter should then add another quarter turn.

Cross threading is also a potential issue. This is of particular concern as it misaligns the filter causing improper gasket contact. This increases the chance of a leak. It can also mean that the filter can work loose.

Finally, Comline recommends that a new oil filter should also be lubricated prior to fitment. This means putting a small amount of oil on the gasket rings to ensure a secure seal. This also means the filter is more easily removed at the next service.
