Mitsubishi Halt EV Production for PSA Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Slow sales have forced Mitsubishi Motors to temporarily halt production of the Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn electric cars for PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.

The C-Zero and iOn are rebadged versions of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV which are built in Japan and Mitsubishi have not indicated when production will resume.

In the first six months, Citroen sold 935 C-Zeros and Peugeot sold just 852 iOns in Europe. Mitsubishi has been shipping the cars to PSA since 2010 as part of an agreement to supply a total of 100,000 vehicles. However, since the beginning production in 2009, Mitsubishi has built 28,000 units of the three models. This well below what Mitsubishi had hoped for.

The interruption does not alter Mitsubishi's agreement to co-develop EV versions of the Peugeot Partner and the Citroen Berlingo vans, according to a spokesman.
