In the latest AutobizIreland video, Jon Pulsford spoke to Wendy Williamson, the CEO of the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) about Block Exemption, a set of European rules and regulations that have a massive impact on how independent garages and parts suppliers operate.

Wendy talks about the origins and implications of Block Exemption, a set of rules that essentially maintain a level playing field of operation between the independent sector and the car manufacturers and franchised dealerships, especially in terms of the right to repair a car, access to manufacturer technical information and the right to fit the parts that they want. She then highlights the threats that the aftermarket would face if these regulations fail to be retained or enhanced, when they are up for review in 2023.

The planning process for new Block Exemption regulations, is now well underway and Wendy gives some insight into the vital lobbying activity of organisations such as the IAAF and FIGIEFA. She describes how these regulations are now even more important due to developments in technology such as the connected car, before also touching on how Brexit may impact on legislation.

Block Exemption is a key issue when it comes to the future of every aftermarket business in Europe and it is important that decision makers in these businesses are familiar with the concept, so that they can support lobbying bodies and put pressure on their EU representative if required. This brief video provides an important overview of the present situation and the possible path ahead.
