Driving licences that expire before June 30th have been granted a four month extension to allow a grace period during the Coronavirus lock-down. The same extension also applies to vehicle testing.

Speaking at a COVID-19 briefing Liz Canavan, Assistant Secretary for Social Policy, Public Service Reform, Government Information Service & Corporate Affairs at the Department of the Taoiseach confirmed the move stating, “This will ensure that people will not lose out due to the temporary closure of the Road Safety Authority facilities and will in particular help to keep vital health and supply chain workers on our roads.”

The extension to driving licences applies from the date the licence is due to expire. Ms. Cavavan added, "The same extensions apply to certificates of competency received on passing a driving test, driver theory test certificates, motorcycle initial basic training certificates and to National Car Tests and vehicle road worthiness tests."

The move means that any NCT due to expire in May or June will now be extended until September or October.
