Comline Ireland highlights Steering & Suspension up sell opportunities

Comline Ireland has called on workshops to assess the condition of a vehicle’s steering & suspension components during every service, as doing so could present an upselling opportunity.

Comline Ireland’s Chris Pegg, the brand’s senior business line manager, says that Steering & suspension components shouldn’t need to be changed at every service interval as Comline Ireland has a three-year, no quibble warranty on its products, for example. However, Chris believes workshops shouldn’t wait for the work to come to them, but instead, they should inspect the likes of ball joints, bushes and control arms, in case they are opportunities to seize on.

Chris comments, “The deterioration of the roads in the Ireland is becoming a bigger issue. We are aware that, despite increases in funding, there are reports and surveys that tell us that not enough is being done to cure the pothole problem, something that get worse at this time of year. While this is an understandable frustration for the motorist, for workshops it’s a golden upselling opportunity.”

Chris adds, “A customer may not be aware of any steering & suspension problems; they may not know what signs to look out for, so technicians could seize an opportunity to spend some time in lifting the vehicle up for a closer look. The customer is likely to be grateful as well because if a technician diagnoses and replaces a split boot, for example that’ll mean the vehicle will pass and NCT.”

Comline Ireland has two key pieces of advice when it comes to fitting its steering & suspension components: use a torque wrench and follow the manufacturer’s specifications. Follow those rules and technicians should be able to ‘fit and forget’, leaving the customer in no doubt they’re leaving the workshop in a vehicle that has been given careful and professional dedication. Chris advises, “Steering & suspension components shouldn’t be fitted with air tools, There are pre-determined torque settings, and that’s why we advise that the parts should always be fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.”

Comline Ireland’s steering & suspension’s range is forecast to grow by a third in 2021 and as the autumn and winter seasons begin, the brand is on target to meet its goals. Chris points out, “As the size of the range continues to build, so does our customers’ confidence. Of course, one wants to hang their hat on quality – something we’re proud of – but the project on steering is to build a range of relevant part numbers, carefully chosen to represent the demands of the market. I think there’s a danger of going too far with development as well: I think there’s a perception that more is best; however, if a factor stocks a huge range of references, realistically, how many of those are they actually going to sell?”
