With new technology comes new lessons in what to do and not do. As Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) slowly infiltrate all of the makes and models of cars and vans that are seen in the independent garage every day, mechanics need to understand what the components of these systems look like, where they are located, how they work and how to not interfere with their normal operations.

The Autobiz Helpline has had a few calls that are centered around this emerging and evolving technology, and the mishaps.

Non-Certified Grille on a VW Golf
A VW Golf had a radar fault after some crash damage was repaired. It was sent for ADAS calibration, which was done correctly. The bodyshop had finished off the repair by fitting a different pattern grille. This grille was not original or of certified matching quality.

The VW badge in the replacement grille was apparently interfering with the radar, and therefore the grille was not suitable for ADAS. Removing the grille solved the problem.

This, and other ADAS problems, have started to appear recently, indicating the need for ADAS technician training is now a necessity.
