BMW 5 Series - Past its time tyre Evidence of wear was easily spotted and a nail that had been taking a free ride was also seen in the old tyre

The customer who owns this 2001 BMW M5 has had the motor since it was a couple of years old. He has no problems with spending money on the motor and has upgraded the exhaust system and the audio system a few times during his ownership.

He has also been meticulous with the body work and has undergone a couple of full resprays, to ensure the paint stays in fresh condition.

Whenever advised of a problem, he has also not attempted to compromise on the cost and always followed my recommendation. But he has one problem, although he knows when the bodywork is not up to scratch and he knows if the audio system is not quite crisp enough, he has no idea about the mechanical workings of the BMW he drives.

He had felt a slight shimmy on the steering and this he had thought needed attending to, so I got to see the car for the first time since its last service nearly a year ago. A quick glance at the front tyres gave me an idea of what the steering problem was going to be.

Wear on the edge of the tyres was a good indication that the tracking was out, I also found a puncture in one of the tyres and in his usual manner, the owner asked me to fit a new set of four. He has always run the motor with Pirelli tyres and a new set of 235/45 R17 Y were fitted after having checked and corrected the tracking problem.

After picking up his BMW the owner returned the next day to say how well the motor was now running.
