The new Headlight Repair Kit from Standox allows bodyshops and garages to carry out professional repairs to superficial damage and yellowing of headlight lenses with minimal effort. This can not only provide a boost for business, but also increase levels of customer satisfaction.

Just like car paint, headlights are permanently exposed to weathering and outside influences such as stone chips, or even the effects of car washes. This can lead to degradation and can even mean NCT failure.

The Headlight Repair Kit gives bodyshops the opportunity to restore minor damage and signs of wear and tear on headlight lenses in a professional way with high quality, premium refinish products in a spray can. The kit comes with application guidelines and contains a 400ml can of Standox Cleaner, a 250ml can of Standox 1K Headlight Primer U3040 and two 250ml cans of Standox 2K Crystal Clear K9035. These products are suitable for all polycarbonate headlight lenses.

The repair can be carried out in a few simple steps at a suitable, dedicated workstation outside the spray booth, without having to dismantle the headlight. Standox recommends starting by pretreating the headlight lens with the Standox cleaner, a waterbased silicone remover, which should be followed by several sanding passes using gradually increasing grain size (P180 - P3000). The next step is to apply the specially developed Standox 1K Headlight Primer U3040 in a single spray pass using the spray can. The headlight should then dry for approximately 40 minutes at 20ºC. The waterborne primer protects the polycarbonate and ensures secure adhesion of the Standox 2K Crystal Clear K9035.

The protective 2K clear, which is more robust and durable than traditional 1K products, is applied in a single process step without flash-off. Final drying can be carried out at ambient temperature overnight or using forced drying. To complete the repair, the headlight lens can be polished with commercially available polishes.

Kevin Welling, Training Academy Manager for Axalta Coating Systems says, "Bodyshops can offer their customers substantive added value and can also generate additional business by providing professional headlight repair.  The specialist Standox repair kits provide bodyshops with an intelligent solution. By using them, professional refinishers will be able to carry out successful headlight lens repairs without having to dismantle the headlights or take up spraybooth space. This additional service offers an economical alternative to replacing headlights and can help to increase customer loyalty."
