Most mechanics will be familiar with the problem of using an impact wrench in a tight space. Generally it means a compromise, as finding a tool small enough to access the job will mean the mechanic has to sacrifice torque. However, Chicago Pneumatic says it has a solution to this issue in the shape of its CP7727 (3/8”) and CP7737 (½”) angle impact wrenches.

The company says these wrenches offer best in class performance in terms of compact design, low weight, high power and durability, with a design that delivers maximum torque in confined areas. The tools feature unique motor positioning in the head of the tool, combined with a jumbo hammer and direct drive mechanism. This means the impact wrench is better balanced and more efficient. Typically angle impact wrenches are designed with the motor in the handle, which can be bulky and uncomfortable to hold. Having the compact motor in the head provides maximum torque directly at the point of impact, with no energy wasted in a gear system.

To put these claims to the test in a practical environment, Autobiz arranged for the CP 7737 1/2” wrench to be tested by the highly experienced technician, Bernard Clarke, of Clarke’s Garage, in Virginia, Co. Cavan. Bernard said he was generally very impressed by the handling and performance of the wrench and was particularly taken by its compact size and power. He commented, "There weren’t many places that this tool would not fit into. It is a fantastic slim little gun that offers plenty of torque and speed to quickly budge all sorts of difficult bolts and nuts.” He added, "It feels very good in your hand and the direction and activation controls are very easy to use.”

Bernard says that accessing difficult to reach bolts is a growing problem, but found the CP 7737’s combination of size and power to be a great advantage and a genuine time saver. He said, "I had to replace a clutch on a 2006 Nissan X-Trail and this has many awkward bolts and brackets which were much quicker and easier to tackle with this tool.” He added, "It also proved to be very useful on rear shock replacement on the VW Passat and the rear wishbones on the VW Golf.”
