Schaeffler training opens up DSG opportunities

Schaeffler recently held training sessions on the fast expanding area of DSG clutch repair at the premises of Serfac, one of the company’s distributors of LuK Clutches, FAG Bearings and INA Engine components.

The sessions were attended by customers of Clane Motor Factors and Rathcole Motor Factors who were keen to gain a better understanding and practical skills in this specialist and rapidly developing area of technology.

During the session Schaeffler Technical Trainer Andy Walters explained how dry double-clutch transmissions are now increasingly being encountered by independent garages as the technology, which was developed by Schaeffler as an OE solution, is now maturing. It is used on the 7-speed transmission featured in certain Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen models as well as the 6-speed transmission used in many Renault and Ford vehicles. Over 40% of all new VW Group cars are now equipped with this technology and as an OE supplier LuK is the first to be able to offer an effective aftermarket repair solution backed by specialist tools and training.

Schaeffler’s LuK RepSet 2CT can offer a repair solution for DSG transmissions and rising demand for such repairs offers progressive independent garages a very significant business opportunity. However, the repair can only be tackled with the correct training and qualification and to reinforce this point Schaeffler only sell the repair kits to technicians who have received the specialist training.

Each training IMI accredited session has restricted numbers to allow for those attending to be assessed. There is an initial assessment at the start of the session to gauge each participants existing sector knowledge. There then follows an introduction to the theory behind the technology and how it will develop in the future. This is followed by an in-depth practical session using the LuK RepSet 2CT and specialist tools. This not only includes a demonstration of the techniques but also gives participants a chance to complete the procedure themselves.

At the end of the session attendees undergo a further assessment and if successful are awarded a certificate to say they have completed the course.

The Schaeffler Technical Team will be running further training sessions later in the year. Technicians who are interested in completing the training should contact their local stockist or call the Schaeffler Technical Service team on 0044 1432 264264.
