Bosch putting braking components to the test

When you press a brake pedal in a vehicle, you expect nothing less than fast, smooth braking to ensure your safety. Braking performance is something that we generally take for granted, but to achieve this performance takes lots of hard work and dedication by the component makers.

As a leader in braking technology, Bosch, is one organisation that takes it responsibilities in this area very seriously and as such has a brake component testing programme that is rigorously unique.

Bosch understands that safety = total quality control and as a technology leader and long-term partner of the automotive industry, it strives to continuously improve current technologies and lead in new developments, via R&D, prototyping and testing.

Testing is at the heart of all Bosch product development and in the case of its braking components, these are tested in the most extreme conditions in its laboratories and in outdoor testing grounds to go beyond real-life conditions.

For example at Vaitoudden in Sweden, testing takes place between November and the end of March to prove products in extreme winter conditions. The range of facilities include both an urban test track environment and testing on a frozen lake, with surfaces such as packed snow and polished ice.

At the Bosch Boxberg Proving Ground in Germany, there is a state of the art test track complex covering some 250 acres including a high speed oval as well as very challenging intricate test tracks. To test in all types of conditions, brake tests can be carried out on the floodable brake-measurement tracks with various road surfaces and friction coefficients. This includes an aquaplaning basin.

With a further facility at Juvincourt in France, Bosch has unmatched testing facilities that can help to ensure that Bosch braking products always perform to the highest standards no matter what the conditions.

However, the process does not end at the development phase. Unlike many other manufacturers, Bosch has a programme of quality tracking throughout the life of a component. This means that Bosch engineers continue to monitor each product over its lifetime, seeing how it performs in real life conditions and making improvements throughout its lifespan.

All this means that when a driver presses a brake pedal of a vehicle using Bosch braking components, they can be completely confident that they will benefit from the very best performance, based on Bosch expertise, know how and testing.
